Hike in KSRTC bus fare, approval awaited from CM-1

Mysuru: The state transport department had submitted a proposal to Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, to hike the bus fares of the KSRTC buses across the state. State Transport Minister D C Thammana said that he would meet the CM today, i.e. on Thursday, May 9, to discuss the proposed hike.

Both KSRTC and BMTC were keen on increasing the bus fares in September last year but the CM had put the proposal on hold. Both the government transport companies are said to have incurred huge losses as a result of this. KSRTC was likely to increase its bus fares by 18 per cent, said an official.

The KSRTC officials were waiting for the government to clear the fare hike proposal after the Lok Sabha election results.

According to KSRTC officials, the corporation was likely to incur huge losses to the tune of about Rs 100 Crore if the ticket fares were not increased soon.

Such huge losses would hinder the development plans of the corporation like the expansion of the fleet, construction of new bus shelters or improving the existing ones.

Since KSRTC is a state-run transport company, it has an obligation to provide service to all parts of the state even though some routes are not financially viable.
